A view of Lacoste from the garden. The château on the hilltop, now owned by couturier Pierre Cardin, was once owned by the notorious Marquis de Sade. Unfortunately the Marquis didn't get to spend too much time here since he was imprisoned for his writings by French authorities. Mr. Cardin has also purchased many of the houses in the village, and owns a bakery/pizza shop. If you have an interest in French history, nearby you can visit the St. Hilaire Convent, built by the Carmelites in the 13th century, and encompassing architectural styles from Roman to Gothic. Another must for food-lovers is the fabulous 2 Michelin starred restaurant – Edouard Loubet at the Domaine de Capelongue in Bonnieux.
This is the spectacular view of the property as seen from the village. Once home to veteran landscape designer Alex Dingwall-Main, who not only designed the garden but also wrote several books while at the property including The Luberon Garden, The Angel Tree and The Vine Garden, the house has featured in numerous interior decorating publications including Dream Homes Country book and the OKA magazine. More recently the garden has been managed by Tim Rees, a colleague of Rosemary Verey.
Lacoste is a small historic hilltop town in the Vaucluse Department of Provence in the south of France between Ménerbes and Bonnieux, both of which are approximately 6km away and lying between the Petit Luberon Hills to the south and the River Calavon to the north. This is a protected area forming part of The Luberon Regional Natural Park. Lacoste is most well-known for the impressive chateau. It is a village of ancient stone buildings connected by narrow ‘calade’ pebble surfaced streets and which has a Tuesday market. It is set in an agricultural area of fertile plains and picturesque hills where fruit growing activities, including cherries and the well-known Cavaillon melon take place alongside the vineyards.
The house, almost 300 years old, has the aura that only an ancient property can have, and has evolved organically over time; this can never be achieved in new construction. You get endless views of Lacoste, Ménerbes, Bonnieux and the entire Luberon.
The landscaped garden is a delight. There's also a pond on the property which enjoys mottled shade, a perfect environment for the Koi carp. Please note that the pond does not have a perimeter fence, therefore children need to be supervised at all times when in this vicinity.
Situated just outside the kitchen and dining area, this is a wonderful spot to relax in the mottled shade of the Wisteria covered pergola. There are further areas near the swimming pool where meals can be enjoyed alfresco.
A well-known landscape designer and author has been at work here to develop the gardens. You will find a rose and ivy covered arched trellis; an incredible wide-spreading tilleul (lime tree) providing shade for the large dining table; five varieties of cherries--sweet or sour, late or early ripening; many artistically sculpted trees and bushes, and much more. There is even a stone garden.
