Séguret was inhabited since Roman times and we can date wine production as far back as this Roman presence with the discovery of wine related divinities.
But the major historical factor in the local wine producing industry is the founding of the monastery of Prébayon which owned wine domains in the area.
The name Séguret comes from Securelo which is a provencal variation of the latin word for secure, indicating the presence of a castle. A castle was in fact built in Séguret by the Comte de Toulouse in the 10th century, of which only a ruined tower remains..
