L'Isle sur la Sorgue is the perfect place in which to relax and soak up the everyday colourful life of the town - and its characters! What better way to do this than under the shade of an ancient plain tree enjoying a refreshing drink in one of the many outdoor cafes scattered around the town.

L'Isle sur la Sorgue offers a melange of excellent restaurants, from the 'locals' haunts to Michelin starred wonders.

Not Venice, Italy but the famous floating market of Isle sur la Sorgue.

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, formerly L'Isle-en-Venaissin, was originally a city of fishermen. It was a virtual island in the middle of swamps until the surrounding countryside was gradually drained by the digging of canals.

Since then the abundant and regular waters of the river Sorgue provided the energy necessary for local industry. Paddle wheels powered wheat mills from as early as the twelfth century, and later the setting up of workshops to treat wool and silk. While silk generated new fortunes, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue became the centre for wool treatment.

Of the 62 wheels that were in use in the nineteenth century (demonstrating the intense activity that prevailed then) the 12 moss covered water wheels surviving today are scattered about the town. Today the water wheels are decorative and add to the sights and sounds of the town.

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is a town which thrives all year round. The world renowned Sunday market is an absolute must to experience. Bric-a-brac and old wares dealers line the surrounding street; potters and artists, farmers and olive oil producers, lavender growers and cheese makers, flower stalls and jewellery makers ... the colour, aroma, buzz and excitement are all great fun.

Thursday morning brings a farmers market where fresh produce is abundant, and you'll find yourself heading home with far more than intended ... our stomachs sometimes rule!!

During the Easter 4-day weekend and the third weekend of August each year, antique dealers and buyers from around the world descend on the town and oh what fun ... but be early to catch the bargains, or arrive late when it's about over and the dealers are exhausted and happy to bargain!

Situated 32kms east of the market town of Apt, 27kms from the walled city of Avignon (airport & the TGV station), 72kms from the thriving city of Aix-en-Provence and 70kms from Marseille airport.

L'Isle sur la Sorgue is georgraphically well placed for exploring the region. The Luberon Valley overflows with stunning medieval perched villages such as Bonnieux, Menerbes, Goult, Roussillon, Lacoste and many others. St-Rémy-de-Provence is a delight to visit, as is Uzes, Cassis and the Camargue area ... all well within a days exploring from L'Isle sur la Sorgue.
