Close GallerySt-Rémy-de-Provence is perhaps the most beautiful small town in Provence. Post World War II, it was an agricultural area, specializing in flower seeds and sheep. You might still see the sheep near the town but now St-Rémy is known as a sophisticated country town with some of the best Provence has to offer, including a wonderful, central location. Here you have a choice of many excellent cafés and restaurants, serving everything from simple, fresh local food to Michelin-starred cuisine. There is a famous Wednesday morning market, many excellent permanent food shops, and wonderful clothing shops and galleries. St-Rémy is the perfect place to stroll along the streets and enjoy the sites. -
Close GalleryThe Alpilles region, where the mas is located, has quite a few wineries, mainly known for their rosés but the area also produces good reds. You will certainly try them at restaurants and bistros while you are in the region, but you should also visit some good local wineries If you would like to taste some of the famous Côtes-du-Rhône wines, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is only 45 minutes away. Gigondas and Vacqueryas are a little farther but it is definitely worth the drive to taste these world-class but reasonably priced wines, and to see the villages. -

Close GallerySt-Rémy-de-Provence is a town with great historical significance. The Romans established the town of Glanum here, which you can visit along with two large ancient Roman monuments. Next to Glanum you find St Paul de Mausole, with its 12th century cloister and chapel, and the hospital where Van Gogh lived for most of the last year of his life. Van Gogh did many paintings near the hospital and close to town; you can do a Van Gogh walking tour and follow his path to see reproductions of the works he did in these places. -
Close GalleryA very interesting and fun “Troglodite” site in ancient stone quarries is very close to the St Paul de Mausole site. The doctor and astrologist Nostradamus was born of Jewish grandparents in St-Rémy before he left for studies in Avignon and Montpellier. Jews lived in St-Rémy from the time of the Roman occupation until their expulsion in 1501; there is an ancient Jewish cemetery right outside town and a tiny Jewish ghetto behind the Catholic church that testify to their presence. As you approach the home after you leave the D5 road, you will pass an ancient Jewish cemetery dating back to the 15th century. -

Close GalleryMany travelers come to Provence in search of the famous lavender fields; here you can enjoy them daily during lavender season, usually June through July/August. There are many varieties of lavender grown in Provence, the pure "lavande" found only at higher elevations around Sault and Gordes, and the hybrid "lavandin" found all over Provence at lower elevations. There is a huge price difference between these varieties.
The family of the owners of the villa are long-time producers of lavender; the large entry courtyard was used to dry the plants. They introduced aromatherapy in France and have a company headquartered in Lyon, France, GatteFossé. You will see the photos and other memorabilia in the home. -

Les Baux-de-Provence, just about 15 minutes away, produces wonderful olive oil, which many connoisseurs consider the best in France. Be sure to visit one of the several olive oil mills in the area, or a shop where you can taste different varieties of olives used in the oils. A real treat for gourmets. -

Close GalleryThe owners have created an extremely welcoming place to dine. The dining room is the perfect fusion of the ancient --beams, fireplace, furniture, floor tiles--with the modern version of a traditional Provençal farm table. The walnut dining table is 3 meters (over 9 ft) long and one meter wide, seating 12 people. The house is set up for 12 guests, but outside tables can hold more. -
Close GalleryThe sitting room with a tv. In the back you see a beautiful and rare Provençal radassière--a three seat bench with rush seats--made for resting and relaxing during the hot afternoons. The ancient fireplace is not longer used.
Antique lovers will be in heaven in the region since the world-famous antique center of L'Isle sur la Sorgue is only 45 minutes away; the Sunday morning Provençal market and brocante always attract lots of fans. But there are quite interesting antique shops closer to St Rémy where you will get a very warm welcome and might make some very interesting finds. Of course the shops can help you ship. -
Close GalleryThe only bedroom on the ground floor, with a 180 cm bed that can also be separated into twins. Easy access to this room makes it suitable for the mobility impaired. Or, this suite can be used for staff with the family quarters on the first floor. The entire house is air-conditioned. -

An antique table has been used as the washstand. There are beautiful touches of antiques all over the home, but not enough to overwhelm. -

Please note the walnut armoire and writing table. Previously there were many walnut trees in Provence,
and the wood was used to make antique furniture, which is even more beautiful hundreds of years later.

Close GalleryThis is the "chapel" dormitory since it used to be a chapel--just look at the vaulted shape of the ceiling. There is also a fireplace in the corner of the room and a very beautiful window running part of the length of the wall. Three children or teens should enjoy this room. The two beds in the front of the photo can form a 180 cm double so it can also be used for a couple.
The ensuite bathroom is across the hall. -
