The house sits in two hectares of land, a large part of which is beautifully cultivated garden, and the rest a large field with far-reaching views. The entrance has automatic electric gates and an impressive gravel drive flanked by olive trees. The attractive 12 x 6 metre pool is surrounded by terracing with loungers and parasols, and the beautiful vine-covered terrace running in front of the house has a table for 12 and an old stone barbecue for those balmy summer evenings. This is an excellent property for large families or groups of friends and has the added benefit of a self-contained guardian's cottage with double bed, stone chimney, bathroom and kitchenette, ideal for anyone wishing to bring a maid, driver or nanny. A handyman will come twice weekly to attend to the pool and garden.
Mas de Fournel has oodles of charm. The current owners have spent a lot of time, money and effort in restoring this lovely, characterful property and furnishing it with taste and flair. There is a great feeling of spaciousness throughout, especially on the ground floor where a huge kitchen, dining room and living room lead into each other. The house is ideally located for exploring the many delights of Provence. Nearby Cavaillon has a huge weekly market and is also very well serviced as regards supermarkets and other shops. The Luberon, with its myriad perched villages is close at hand and the historic towns of Avignon, Aix-en-Provence and Orange are all within easy reach. The delightful market town of L'Isle sur la Sorgue, famed throughout France for its numerous antique shops, winding streets and water-mills, is only 15 minutes' drive away and chic St. Remy is also less than half an hour.
The dining room, which has a fabulous original beamed ceiling, houses a large collection of books and 'objets d'art' as well as a lovely grand piano. Throughout the house, interesting and unusual works of art decorate the large and comfortable rooms.
There are two sitting rooms, again making the house ideal for people wishing to have the freedom to pursue different activities at different times without feeling on top of each other. The main sitting room has a feature stone fireplace and a large TV and has attractive arched doors leading to the terrace.The 'winter' sitting room has a further large TV and comfortable seating and so provides a perfect room for younger members of the group to relax and enjoy themselves watching TV, playing games or simply hanging out.
The fully-equipped kitchen has a wonderful old tiled floor, an enormous range-style cooker and a table for informal breakfasts or casual dining. There is a large American fridge, two freezers and a separate laundry room with two washing machines and freezer. Four hours of cleaning per week is included in the rental.
The master bedroom has a vaulted beamed ceiling, a huge TV and lovely views over the pool and garden. The room has been cleverly divided with a partition wall and the resulting en-suite bathroom has two basins, bath and a separate shower and WC. It is the only room in the house benefit from air-conditioning.
The landing outside the master bedroom has an enormous walk-in closet with more than ample space for guests to hang their extra clothes and store their luggage or all those purchases made in the local markets.
