Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was born and lived in Aix-en-Provence. He is considered the 19th century bridge between Impressionism and Cubism inspiring the likes of Picasso and Matisse. He was a childhood friend of famous French author Emile Zola and much of his late work included paintings of the Aix countryside especially the striking Montagne Sainte Victoire.

Aix-en-Provence was founded in 123 BC by the Roman consul Sextius Calvinus who named the Roman colony Aquae Sextiae which in time would become Aix. During the Middle ages, Aix was the capital of Provence and around the 12th century developed into an important artistic and philosophical centre of the Mediterranean when the counts of Provence decided to make it their choice of residence.

Like so many towns of Provence, Aix boasts a large collection of elaborate fountains, pictured above is the 1860 Great fountain de la Rotonde.
