Aix-en-Provence was founded in 123 BC by the Roman consul Sextius Calvinus who named the Roman colony Aquae Sextiae which in time would become Aix. During the Middle ages, Aix was the capital of Provence and around the 12th century developed into an important artistic and philosophical centre of the Mediterranean when the counts of Provence decided to make it their choice of residence.

Since this Golden Age, Aix-en-Provence has retained a civilized and artistic atmosphere offering a wide choice of amenities and cultural activities which makes it one of our top destinations in Provence when promoting luxury villa rentals.

Like so many towns of Provence, Aix boasts a large collection of elaborate fountains, pictured above is the 1860 Great fountain de la Rotonde. It is situated near the Cours Mirabeau which is wide thoroughfare decorated with plane trees and fountains where you will find many of Aix's landmarks and popular sights.

Aix-en-Provence is host to a series of markets from Tuesday to Thursday and Saturday. Each has a theme: flowers, fresh produce, flea market, clothes...
Most of them take place around the Cours Mirabeau where you will also find the famous Café "Les Deux Garçons"- opened in 1792- which counted amongst its regular clients Paul Cézanne, Emile Zola and Ernest Hemingway.
