Cairanne
Cairanne lies in the heart of the Cote du Rhone wine growing area, with neighbouring villages such as Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Sablet, Seguret and Beaumes de Venise,
Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes ~ 5 km The Dentelles de Montmirail are part of the wonderful views one can enjoy in the area since Cairanne is also near Mont Ventoux. The spectacular ruins of Vaison-la-Romaine are only twenty minutes drive away. Here you will also find restaurants and good shopping. But the best part is being able to explore an entire Roman town. Like Orange, Vaison-la-Romaine hosts various dance, jazz and choir festivals every summer in its antique theatre. It is also active in the automn with the "Journées Gourmandes" a yearly event where producer of delicacies from all around France come to present their exclusive products (candied fruits, wines, foie gras...).
The largest town near Cairanne is Orange, which offers a wide selection of commodities from shops, cafes, restaurants and some of the best preserved Roman buildings in Provence and Europe. |
Cairanne is made up of two distinct parts: the old village on top of the hill and the village proper below. Most of the buildings in the old village date from the eighteenth century except the old ramparts which date back to the 12th century when first the Knights Templar and then the Knights Hospitaller lived in the village. Cairanne has a small weekly market on Thursday and in Vaison la Romaine, just 10 minutes drive away, there is an enormous Tuesday market well worth visiting. |
