The spectacular ruins of Vaison-la-Romaine are only twenty minutes drive away. Here you will also find restaurants and good shopping. But the best part is being able to explore an entire Roman town. Like Orange, Vaison-la-Romaine hosts various dance, jazz and choir festivals every summer in its antique theatre. It is also active in the automn with the "Journées Gourmandes" a yearly event where producer of delicacies from all around France come to present their exclusive products (candied fruits, wines, foie gras...).

The largest town near Cairanne is Orange, which offers a wide selection of commodities from shops, cafes, restaurants and some of the best preserved Roman buildings in Provence and Europe.

The antique theatre hosts each summer various festivals with a large choice of musics from rock/Pop to operas and choirs from around the world. The rest of the year also sees many cultural events held in the modern indoor theatre.

Staying in a Just Provence holiday rental in Cairanne not only means you will be close to all the best wineries in Provence but also in the heart of the Gallo-Roman Provence and a region bustling with cultural events.

Cairanne is made up of two distinct parts: the old village on top of the hill and the village proper below. Most of the buildings in the old village date from the eighteenth century except the old ramparts which date back to the 12th century when first the Knights Templar and then the Knights Hospitaller lived in the village.

Visible historical remains that can be seen include the old village, the keep, the Chapel of St Roch (1726), the ramparts (1123), the 18th century Autanne Gate, the Chemin de Ronde de St Roch (a path round the battlements), the Templars' Tower, and the Chapel of Notre Dame des Exés (1631).

Close to the Aigues River and with the Dentelles du Montmirail in the distance, the surrounding flatlands are a carpet of vines with their seasonal colour changes and gentle activity. The views from the old village are a must to see.

Although Cairanne is a small village it has all the basic amenities one would expect from a Provençal village, including restaurants and cafes.

The surrounding villages offer all sorts of delights to see and experience. Many, many wineries where you can visit their 'cave' for a 'degustation' .. . such as Rasteau, Séguret, Roaix and Gigondas. Cairanne is in the heartland of the Côtes du Rhône appelation and thus you can expect to discover a new gustative treasure at every "caveau".

During summer there are some superb evening events such as "Music in the Vines" both in Cairanne and the close neighbouring villages.

The nearest train station is in Orange. The TGV is in Avignon. The autoroute is the A7 with the choice of exists at Orange Sud, Orange Centre or even Bollène if your arriving from the north. Airports are Avignon, Marseille and Nimes.

Cairanne has a small weekly market on Thursday and in Vaison la Romaine, just 10 minutes drive away, there is an enormous Tuesday market well worth visiting.
