Cavaillon has since Roman times been a strategic position as a major town at the entrance of the Luberon. Although celts inhabited the area it was the romans who developped it into a major town of Provence due to its position on the Via Domitia.
It loses of its importance during the Middle Ages but kept a strong agricultural activity, after it was given to the popes in the 13th century. It is known as the capital of Cantaloupes.
