Les Baux-de-Provence
Les Baux-de-Provence is in the heart of the Alpilles, only a short drive from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, visitors big and small will enjoy this picturesque medieval village and its castle.Nowadays Les Baux-de-Provence has a tiny resident population and the whole site is a tourist attraction where you will find Europe's largest catapults, regular medieval re-enactments and demonstrations from April to September. |
Les Baux-de-Provence owes its name to its position on a rocky outcrop which is called a bauç in Provençal. It is this ideal defensive position which attracted settlers as far back as 6000 BC.
The Carrières de Lumières is a converted salt mine at the bottom of Les Baux which hosts unique multimedia shows using the 14m high galleries as backdrops to spectacular displays of the world's finest artists. In 2013 the Carrières' theme is "Monnet, Renoir....Chagal. Journeys around the Mediterranean." |
