Lourmarin has been an important staging post on the Marseille-Apt route since the XIth century. It is in the cleft that runs right through the Luberon mountain range, separating the Grand Luberon from the Petit Luberon, and marked by the course of the Aiguebrun river. The drive to Lourmarin is quite thrilling, winding through cliffs and forest, with a few hairpin bends thrown in.

Lourmarin has a tumultuous history since its foundation by knight hospitaliers in the 12th century. It has greatly suffered during the various religion wars due to the presence of Vaudois colons in the area followed by protestant bastions.

One famous son of Lourmarin who emigrated to South Africa in 1688 due to persecutions is Jean Roy. Founder of the country's most famous domain thanks to the know-how he had brought with him from wine rich Luberon.
Other celebrities who lived in Lourmarin are authors Jean Giono and Nobel Prize winner Albert Camus who died in a car accident in 1960 on the way back from Lourmarin to Paris.

Being a very popular tourist destination, Lourmarin has all the commodities one would expect from a Provençal village including restaurants, boutiques and a friday market.

Lourmarin is famous for its 15th century chateau, built and occupied by the Agoult family for three centuries. Many stories are attached to the chateau, and many famous people have stayed there over the years such as François I in 1537. Every year the chateau plays host to a summer music festival. There are wonderful piano recitals as well as theatre & Jazz during the months of July & August.

Luberon is famous for its perched villages, such as Oppède, Gordes, Ménerbes, Roussillon and Lacoste.
Staying in an Emotional Escapes luxury rental in Luberon not only means benefitting from the wonderful views and natural sights the region offers but also the historically rich villages and towns nestled in the surrounding hills.

The UNESCO recognised Luberon Natural Park englobes three mountain ranges in the middle of Provence. Alone it represents 30% of the fauna and flora in France.

Near Lourmarin you will find Oppede-le-Vieux a medieval village preserved in superb condition. Or Menerbes, another small perched village in a sea of cedar trees, that is not only a great place to visit and take in the view but also offers a wide choice of restaurants for all tastes.

Lourmarin has many restaurants, tea houses, antique shops and galleries, all found amongst the narrow winding cobblestone alleys. It is a pleasure to wander through the lanes with their vine clad walls and mature plane trees. Fridays in Lourmarin are dominated by the large market.
